Our Community impact

We are committed to the Oak Park community and anticipate the creation of 50-70 new permanent jobs with a focus on local hires.  We anticipate the store will have $2M in revenues and the resulting in subsequent sales tax in the local economy.

Fixins partners with Edible Sac High to encourage disadvantaged youth to become interested in the restaurant industry and are committed to being a second chance employer to assist with re-entry into the workforce for underemployed populations.  We are currently striving to become a TRUE Zero waste facility and partner with homeless assistance organizations to minimize waste and maximize community benefits.

Oak Park native, former NBA All-Star and Mayor of Sacramento Kevin Johnson and his wife, Michelle, founded Fixins to combine his love of Black culture and her obsession with great food.

Kevin grew up with soul food being the connective tissue of the broader Johnson family.  BBQs and reunions always featured Grandma Glady’s famous peach cobbler and competitions around who made the best collard greens or potato salad.  This restaurant is an homage to this amazing African American family and Johnson’s broader network of friends and associates by featuring all of their best recipes and family favorites.

KJ played in the NBA for 12 years and traveled to 28 cities regularly.  Being on the road made him crave home cooking, so he often sought out soul food restaurants.  He loved those rich experiences but also felt he could build on the best traditions and redefine the American soul food experience by combining it with great service and a cool aesthetic for the restaurant.  The result is Fixins Soul Kitchen.
